from recognition to rights

Nov12AnnualReportShetlandCarers represent 16% of the voting population in Scotland – an important section of the electorate. In nearly every constituency the numbers of carers are bigger than the sitting MSPs majority.

It is vitally important to raise the profile of carers’ issues at a local level and to gather support from local MPs, MSPs and councillors. Although the Parliament legislates for and introduces policy, it is local councils who implement and deliver services and support and allocate funds on the basis of local priorities. By gaining support and raising the profile of carers in your area, you can raise carers’ needs higher up the political agenda.

The Coalition helps carers to campaign for better recognition, rights and for carers by:

  • Bringing carers and our member organisations together at our quarterly meetings to ensure carers have a collective voice and their concerns are brought to the attention of the government and other key decision makers.
  • Developing campaign toolkits and publicity material for local use
  • Ensuring carers and member organisations are kept up to date with government policy and opportunities to influence the political process
  • Working with key partners to develop campaigns such as ‘Scotland’s Carers Manifesto Campaign’ and ‘Getting it Right for Carers Campaign‘.
